  • Keep roots cool in the summer sun
  • Protect roots from upheaval during winter freezing and thawing
  • Break down and nourish the soil.

Materials to Use For Mulching:

  • Alfalfa hay
  • Cocoa beans shells
  • Compost
  • Corncobs (ground up into small pieces)
  • Cypress mulch
  • Grass clippings
  • Shredded leaves
  • Peat moss
  • Pine bark mulch
  • Straw – easy to find and use (beware of seeds which will sprout)
  • Newspaper or brown paper bags
